General Dynamics F-111

Index

Origin:USA, frst flight 21st December 1964.

Design: Having acepted the configuration of a high-mounted swing-wing slab tailerons for pitch and roll (plus wing spoilers augementing roll at low speeds), twin engines in a wide fuselage housing the retracted main gears, and side by side crew seats, GD then concentrated on teh difficult attack and ferry missions and providing large internal fuel capacity, large multimode nose radar plus terrain following radar linked through  the autopilot to flight controls, a very small weapons bay plus large external weapons pylon capacity (despite the entire underside of teh fuselage being sterilized by the landing gears and air brake) and full-span vari-camber slats and double slotted flaps on the outer wings to hold down field length despite the growing MTO weight.

Future:Apart from rebuilding F-111a attack aircraft as EF-111A electronic jamming platforms, the main future plans concern updates to systems, weapons and avionics. Pave Mover is still a possibility, Pave Tack could be procured for the F-111E, and possibly D and the ASPJ and JTIDS are further additions which might be funded before 1985.
